Project: Maxcop

The MaxCOP project aims to develop a smart thermoelectric cooling system with maximum coefficient of performance (COP); it will be an efficient system for reducing the amount of energy used in temperature control applications using thermoelectrics.

The project will significantly improve the system performance and efficiency of thermoelectric cooling systems, creating market-leading technology which will be sold into a range of industrial sectors.

Goals

Provide a test bed for characterising thermoelectric assemblies.
The controller will be able to maintain a user-defined temperature inside the chamber.
The system will operate from a DC voltage – 48V DC.
The system will be able to be controlled using wireless connectivity.

Results

Demonstration of the ‘Adaptive Drive’ principle – The controller was built utilising the ‘Adaptive Drive’ principle of operation. There were some problems in the software which limited the testing
A novel assembly was produced which showed significant promise
The prototype was shown at a trade show in 2014 an generated significant interest as a new development, therefore the commercial product development will continue
A system has been constructed for the telecoms market with more test data needed to produce enough relevant data for the market
The next phase is to move into product development and to launch the product into the telecommunications market
