Across Sub-Saharan Africa, millions of people rely on traditional cooking fuels such as wood and charcoal. These fuels not only produce harmful smoke but also contribute to deforestation and rising greenhouse gas emissions. The SPITFIRE Project, led by European Thermodynamics Limited (ETL), aims to revolutionise how institutional kitchens cook by introducing a clean, efficient, and sustainable alternative — a biomass cookstove designed with cutting-edge thermal and thermoelectric technology.
At its core, the SPITFIRE stove is powered by a Thermoelectric Generator (TEG) and Harvest charger, an ingenious system that converts heat from the stove into electricity. This self-generated energy powers a small fan that improves combustion efficiency and reduces smoke, while surplus electricity can be used to charge mobile devices or power LED lighting. This simple yet powerful innovation makes the stove both sustainable and practical for real-world use.
The stove’s fuelled by biomass pellets and provides an environmentally friendly alternative to charcoal. These pellets are produced from waste agricultural materials, reducing the need for deforestation while providing a reliable, affordable energy source. With each stove estimated to offset up to 18 tonnes of CO₂ per year, the potential environmental benefit is extraordinary.
The SPITFIRE Project is not only about thermal technology but it’s about transformation. By targeting schools, hospitals, orphanages, and community kitchens, the initiative empowers institutions to operate more sustainably, lower their costs, and create healthier spaces for the people they serve.
Backed by ETL’s deep expertise in thermal management and energy harvesting, SPITFIRE project embodies innovation with purpose. This project represents a tangible step towards a low-carbon future and one where communities thrive through clean technology and smarter energy use.
